Scissor Sisters

NEW York’s monarchs of high camp didn’t pull a sellout crowd at Festival Hall, but that didn’t deter them from generating their trademark party atmosphere, with fabulous lighting and choreography, not to mention the ultimate disco benchmark, a cameo from Kylie Minogue.

Before la Minogue hit the stage to reprise her Glastonbury appearance on Any Which Way with the band, the Sisters amped things up with a set mostly drawn from new album Night Work, sprinkling in some of their hits from their self-titled debut – Laura, Tits on the Radio and Take Your Mama getting the big reactions.

Their marriage of glam disco and rock, with shared bass and lead guitar from Del Marquis and Babydaddy, already had the crowd at hands-in-the-air stage when ”secret” guest Kylie hit the stage for Any Which Way late in the set, bringing the venue to its feet.

She returned for the encore – after an outfit change, natch – for a countrified acoustic version of her new single, All the Lovers, before the Sisters broke out their biggest hit, Comfortably Numb, for a second encore, before leaving the ecstatic crowd with one more new track, Invisible Light, having transformed a mundane Monday night into one of the biggest events on Melbourne’s gay calendar.
